What critics don't understand is the value of Wikipedia's utility -- the opportunity benefit created by its accessibility, volume, and immediacy -- over traditional encyclopedias. Take, for instance, the reliability of my trusty hardbound 1994 Brittanica on Bosnia, or its authority on the latest head coach hire for the Browns, or its utter lack of ubiquity.

What is remarkable is that the sampling error for this small study is greater than the difference in the purported accuracy. Absolutely meaningless.

You are so right.

From my experience Wikipedia does not want cultural truth and homogenizes and sterilizes everything in it's quest for truth.

I began listing a few folk songs and histories that were handed down through 4 generations of family members. These songs were from the Western NC mountains.

The information was abruptly deleted from a man in Poland stating that I violated copyright and that I was not able to provide a source.

I tried to explain that the songs were over 100 years and were considered traditional as they are in the public domain.

I was told this was not encyclopedic as no source could be given so the song lyrics and history of the meaning of the song remains deleted.

I have to laugh at this because I am the authority on these songs I was wanting to share the cultural relevance of these songs.

Unfortunately, the Appalachian songs Wikipedia have put up are by archivists of the 50's and 60's who butchered the lyrics because they did not understand the culture and the southern dialect they were researching.

I tried to correct a few of these songs, but again was defeated as I could not source my knowledge of southern US dialect. I laughed at that because I from the Southern US and live in the Appalachian mountains where these songs are still sung to this day.

This is really all a shame because Wikipedia will continue to perpetuate cultural myths that will end up becoming truth to a new generation of internet users.

Yeah, we discussed that issue me and my colleagues. Evaluation of marketing efforts is maybe easy to do briefly but it's not easy to evaluate the results you get.

I think you said that just by sending a journal that they may see the logo of is branding. How do you measure that? Even if you don't get more downloads right on maybe they go to the library next time and don't buy the book on amazon because they remember the exlusive library journal that felt impressive and impressive libraries may have the book I want.

I think you should be very careful when doing evaluations of your marketing efforts. I heard one librarian that stopped doing marketing questionnaires because they always got the same answer: Library is terrific but I haven't time... I mean you don't always get the answers or the data you would want to have, that would demand some brain scanning of their daily basis thoughts and lucky us we haven't come that far yet

But maybe undercover bambusing their office could be something... ;-)

Lars, you kindly missed the very last question (from Lotta). She asked, if I had done some EBLIP to prove the success of our activities such as more downloads from e-Journals. Unfortunately I'd admit to be somewhat lazy. There is only anecdotal evidence (and hit statistics) that it works. But Lotta is true, we need to raise Evidence. But it should not be more time consuming than the service itself. What could be valuable outcome measures? I don't intend to increase e-Journals downloads by marketing, but the increase of use of rare databases (such as EMbiology) or the different use of PubMed could be studied. That are nice suggestions for future work.

I have long been angered by the fact we are forced to buy an OS when we buy hardware... I can't wait for a lawsuit like the French one to be filed in the US...

Viva la Freedom!!!

Thanks,
Matty

As a follow-up to my comment above it is to be noted that Mobile search is going to provide that quantum leap for ISP as the GEO factor is one of the most important factors yet to be able to be weighed into ranking results. A users individual history is easier to maintain due to cell phone numbers being unique as well as the factor that they are where the users take them. Laptops and desktops do not provide similar multi point GPS feeds on a daily basis. As mobile applications such as VOD or P2MVOD. begin to take form most information targeted to user experience will be provided by the search results.

There are so many elements to be considered and individual preference and user experience is the ultimate litmus test. Since reach is becoming more identifiable by a measure of one, soon ISP will be able to deliver based on user preference as well as GEO or GPS indexing. These two major factors will provide a much more tailored user experience, as two users searching under the same key words may have very different intentions and should eventually receive rather different results based on history of profile.

Hi,

That would be me... I was cryptic, at first, about my identity as I was working as a systems librarian and I wasn't entirely sure I wanted work and blog intermingled. However, due to health reasons I had to leave my beloved post, and the blog's gone on, with modifications, mainly due to the health issues.

I was a reference/systems librarian in a suburb of Boston, MA, USA. Now I'm working very part time as an archivist for the local historical society.

Thanks for the mention, and certainly keep the open source faith. Nothing can beat it for public access computers, and I believe it's time has come for staff/ILS solutions.

it looks like there are now two versions of Koha, at least based on liblime's website: http://liblime.com/koha: Koha Classic and Koha ZOOM. I think that Koha Classic is the 2.2.6 (7?) version of Koha and Koha ZOOM is another version that has a new search component. Anyway, here's a link to the new Koha ZOOM OPAC, which looks pretty slick (I want one): http://search.athenscounty.lib.oh.us

I used to think that OpenSource was inferior to normal software, but based on Koha, it looks better!

I have just checked with PayPal that it can cooperate with my czech bank account though there is not a bit of information about it on my bank's website. Anyway I am affraid it is going to cost a fortune. Right now there are all the pics from Eahil uploaded so you won't miss anything.

Hi there,

The name of the vendor supporting Koha is LibLime, not LibMe. ;-). They provide a number of support services on Koha including hosting, installation, development, migration assistance, software maintenance, staff training, and technical support.

I'm not sure what Lars means by "library course director" but I am information specialist (or chief medical librarian) in Kuopio University Hospital Medical Library which is a library for both the staff of Kuopio University Hospital and the medical faculty of the University of Kuopio. I'm also the university library's deputy director.

Well, your first blog post worked out fine! Yes, everyone should be skeptical to all new things even blogs, but not without trying them out first and evaluating/reading them first. Many I meet is very skeptical without as I see first visiting talks like the one of Oliver or trying to read and find blogs. I mean if there are 50 million blogs of course the most are rubbish, but finding just one or two grain of gold could be worth more than all other sources like encyklopedias or mainstream news services. My favourite for the moment are Geeking with Greg (former Amazon worker glinden.blogspot.com), Danny Sullivans personal blog Daggle.com, Gary Price Resourceshelf.com. And you french guysgirls have that Abondance that I try to understand from time to time ;-)

Nice socializing with you at the conference. I can tell the readers why I met Hervé is because his very found of Scopus, and he should be, and saw my name because of my projectblog oneentry.wordpress.com where I evaluated Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar.

So, I'm the first ! (and indeed my first post in a blog ! I hope I will do it right !)..

Lars, that was a pleasure to meet you last week, and also all the nice people : the swedish community, people from Poland, Dutch guy from Groninguen, organizers, etc. Honnestly speaking, I was rather sceptic about blogs, initially... Now, you, Guus and Oliver have absolutely convinced me to try such services in a professionnal environment !!! C U soon !

According to Wikipedia it's 342.000 inhabitants, so should we trust Encyclopedia Britannica? Maybe there are some truth in the Nature article "Internet encyclopaedias go head to head" http://www.nature.com/news/2005/051212/full/438900a.html published in Nature 14 dec 2005.
